Gallery Entrance

On 4th November 1893 forces of the British `South Africa Company occupied Bulawayo.  A month later Cecil Rhodes arrived in Bulawayo and appointed a young surveyor,, Patrick Fletcher (later joined by Espin), to set out a new town covering and area of one square mile.  On 1st June 1894 the town was declared open.Entrance of byo gallery

As early as 1891, Sir John Willoughby commuted between Rhodesia and London working on schemes for investments to develop the Colony.This finally resulted in the formation of Willoughby’s Consolidated Co. (1894) Ltd.  The company interests were mining, ranching and the Bulawayo Waterworks & Electricity Co.

The Beit reference Library

The Beit reference library is a unique non circulatory information centre situated on the first floor of the National Gallery in Bulawayo. The library opened its doors to the public in the year 1994 and befittingly it was named in honour of the major principal sponsor the BEIT TRUST FOUNDATION. The library is open to the public from Tuesday to Friday from 0900hrs to 1700hrs.

Education and Outreach

The programme aims to empower artists to be a mouth piece for the people and enable women’s and young people’s participation in shaping their destiny and future Zimbabwe, the programme would like to increase awareness and appreciation of art to spread across to rural areas and make known the fact that art knows no boundaries.

The Studio

The studios add an element of uniqueness to the Gallery as one finds the artist at work during working hours. Our artists cover engravers, batiks, sculptors, painters and literary arts. MARSHAL BARON GALLERY

Marshall Baron was the son of Ben Baron, who was a lawyer for the nationalists like Joshua Nkomo. Marshall Baron followed in his father’s footsteps. Apart from being a lawyer, he was an art n music critique. He donated all his paintings to be auctioned toward the renovation of the gallery in 1994.He is deceased.
